Mazda launched its first passenger car, the R360 Coupe, throughout Japan on May 28, 1960. Offering 2+2 seating, independent suspension, and a four stroke V-twin engine, the affordably priced and advanced coupe was instrumental in further expanding Japan’s already booming Kei car market. The stylish and functional coupe form enclosing the 2+2 cabin also led the field in Japan's car design. “As a member of the Cosmo Sport owners club of Japan, I was invited to their international gathering in Hiroshima in September, and a week after that I headed up to Mt Fuji Speedway for the 50th anniversary celebration of the rotary engine. It went on sale in Japan in June of 1960 and by the end of the year more than 23,000 of them had been sold, giving the company a 65 per cent share of the micro-mini car market.It was the foundation block upon which Mazda built its successful passenger car business.This particular model, a 1966 R360, was built at the end of the model’s six-year production run and it is an important part of Danny’s collection – the company’s first passenger car was one that he could not pass up the chance of owning – and one he tracked down in 2011.“Mazda were making the T-series and D-series trucks, but this was their first vehicle where their focus was on moving people,” says Danny. This was Mazda’s first 4-wheeled car offering. It was the foundation block upon which Mazda built its successful passenger car business. The car's popularity increased even further after the launch, and by August Mazda was selling in excess of 2,000 units per month. That collection, owned by Danny Irvine of Mazda specialist Automotive Plus, has some true gems, including a cracking 1990 JC Cosmo (the flagship of Mazda’s luxury Eunos division and the first production car to have a built-in GPS navigation system) and the JC Cosmo’s rare and stunning-looking predecessor, a 1968 110S L10A Cosmo Sport. In helping to fulfill people's dreams of owning a car, the R360 Coupe played a leading role in the development of Japan's motorization.The attraction of the R360 Coupe was not price alone. Both of those events were amazing, and I was able to meet some of the original engineers who worked on the rotary project as well as talk to the gentlemen involved in the development of cars like the MX5 and the RX7.
